MonitorControl: Control External Monitor Brightness and Volume with Your Keyboard
Introduction
Mac users connecting to third-party monitors have long faced a pain point: the keyboard brightness keys only work for the built-in display, so adjusting an external screen means reaching for its physical buttons. MonitorControl solves this — once installed, your keyboard brightness and volume keys can control external displays directly, complete with the native macOS adjustment overlay, matching the experience of an Apple-branded display.
A slider also appears in the menu bar, letting you adjust each screen individually or sync all displays with a single slider. It can lower brightness below the hardware minimum (by software overlay dimming), which is especially useful at night.
Installation
1 | brew install --cask monitorcontrol |
Or download the .dmg directly from the Releases page.
After installation, grant accessibility permissions in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility to use keyboard brightness control.
